West Bali Story

Youth action and entrepreneurial heroes on the lesser known parts of Bali

This talk will be about the group of local youth who are taking action to preserve and protect rural areas of Bali, while also educating and empowering the local community of West Bali. They will elaborate on the challenges rural areas in Bali are currently facing in the shadows of mass tourism and their strategy to overcome these challenges. Learn about the richness of resources in this rural area and its pristine natural landscape. After the talk, we will have a chance to sample some intriguing products that are produced by the entrepreneurial heroes of West Bali, including organic chocolate produced by local farmers, virgin coconut oil produced based on the moon cycle, crispy mushrooms made by a self-learned entrepreneur from an isolated village, and many more.

About the organization:
Five Pillar Foundation was founded in 2014 to help position rural village communities to protect and preserve their culture and environment and to share their story with the international community. It aims to develop the full potential of villages and communities using an integrated approach that helps communities to recognize and create economic, social, environmental, human, and cultural forms of capital and also develop sustainable eco- and community-inspired adventures that create economic opportunity for local communities while also raising international awareness around local Balinese values. Its vision is to establish a strong, educated, and self-sufficient communities in Bali that protects and preserves their environment & culture.

About the speaker:
Wira is a young Balinese community leader, social innovator, and social entrepreneur. He has a strong passion to share Balinese culture with the world and works with youth from remote villages in West Bali to help them develop skills so that that they can create new opportunities in rural areas and work with their communities to protect their environment and cultural traditions. As Co-founder of Five Pillar Foundation, Wira has developed Five Pillar’s integrated assets-based approach to community development and actively involves himself in understanding the needs and challenges of local rural communities. He is currently involved in working with rural communities to create community-based tourism experiences that raise awareness of the importance of the role that rural communities play in protecting nature and culture here in Bali.
