Ensuring Freshwater Resilience in Bali

A Solution to Protect Bali’s Drying Freshwater Resources

Despite being a tropical island with high rainfall, Bali’s watersheds are drying at a concerning rate, mostly due to over-extraction. The immense development boom of the last 20 years has resulted in an alarming water crisis. This has also caused a high rate of saltwater intrusion into Bali’s freshwater aquifers due to excessive extraction of water. But there is a solution! The Bali Water Protection Program (BWP) proposes to impulse freshwater resilience and good practice throughout the province through 3 subprograms: Aquifer Recharge, Education and Media Campaign.

BWP aims to implement a new water management model in Bali and achieve the following objectives:

  • Replenish the groundwater reservoirs (also called “aquifers”) that are currently drying up and are threatened by saltwater intrusion.
  • Promote river stewardship of kids schooled alongside riverbanks to protect their rivers from drying up and being polluted by trash and chemical pollution.
  • Inform the population about the water crisis: most Balinese don’t even know about the issue!

What You Will Learn:

  • The water cycle
  • Bali’s looming yet still unknown water crisis
  • BWP’s solution to solve this issue
  • BWP’s milestone achievements and where they are up to now
  • What you can do to support BWP and help prevent a water crisis in Bali

About the Speaker:

Komang “Bobby” Ganaris is the Program Manager of the Bali Water Protection Program at IDEP Foundation. He has more than 19 years of work experience in the NGO sector in Bali. He has spoken at various events in Indonesia to promote this cause and spread awareness of the water issue on the island.

About the Organization:

The Bali Water Protection (BWP) Program calls on all Balinese civil, business, political and spiritual leadership as well as all visitors and residents to take responsibility and action in protecting Bali’s freshwater resources. BWP is here to implement rapid aquifer replenishment through a proven and simple technology called rainwater-fed recharge wells to ensure Bali’s present and future water sovereignty. BWP won the “Outstanding trophy” in the 2017 World Water Challenge contest for its simplicity and ingenuity.
